CSR activity with WSO2 staff
The annual trip of WSO2 for 2011 was a three day trip to Kanadalama and we were staying two nights at Heritance Kandalama Hotel. It was full of fun activities including 'Awurudu Games'. But among all those there was a thing that was for society from the hearts of the employees. As an intern, me too got the chance to join this trip, contribute this great work and witness the happiness of some kids who were living far from our reach.
This school, Bellane Oya Primary School was a less privileged school and it was an idea of Dr. Sanjeewa Weerawarna, CEO of the company to help such school in the area. Funds were raised with contribution of both the company and employees and finally volunteers could join in visiting the school, helping out them in clearing an area for playground and checking for what else they are needing.
When we were there, they warmly welcomed us and the kids were willing to see what we have brought for them. I had my primary education at Kirindiwela Maha Vidyalaya, which was bit same as this school in background and this really guided me to my childhood. In his speech Dr. Sanjeewa mentioned that lot of employees of the company were like those kids once a time ago and me myself is an example for that. His intention of that was to encourage the students and I am sure that at least few of them have raised the hope and courage with that.
Me too could give away few books to the kids and could closely witness that happiness bloomed in their hearts, which was one of the best things I added to my memories from the trip. They were so happy to have them were looking at the books and all the stuff with lot of care and desire.
Then we could be among them, getting to know them and I got a chance to play with them. Company has donated them a basketball and it was time to use the skills I have developed playing at university. Without the tar court they will not be able to play basketball and I thought to introduce them the simplest drills of the game. They were so interested in learning that and me too enjoyed a lot playing with them. I felt I did something for them and received lot of love from them in return. Finally they were unhappy when we were stopping the game and getting ready to leave them.
Nadee and Ishaa too were joining with me in this and the kids wanted three of us to visit a hidden place they used to play. Anupama, Nethmi and Mariam are few of those kids I can still recall and I am sure at least few of all those kids will have some light on their paths because of that day. It was such a happy moment for me to feel that I did something for them whom I did not even heard before and got that close in such a little time.
All the best kids!!!
It would be a great occasion, if one of them can make it to WSO2 for their career in the future!!!
